Yahoo marketing chief Kathy Savitt leaves for STX Entertainment

SAN FRANCISCO — Yahoo's marketing chief Kathy Savitt, who was tasked with broadening the appeal of Yahoo's aging brand to a new generation of consumers, is leaving to join start-up film and television studio STX Entertainment where she will lead its digital content business.

Savitt, who was a key lieutenant to Chief Executive Marissa Mayer, was also responsible for Yahoo News, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Sports.
Yahoo confirmed Savitt's departure in an emailed statement.
We appreciate her contributions to Yahoo over the past three years and wish her well," Yahoo spokeswoman Becky Auslander wrote.
Savitt's departure comes amid a growing number of defections from Yahoo as well as a growing chorus of questions from Wall Street about the leadership of Mayer, a former Google executive who came in more than three years ago on a tide of high expectations but has failed to revive growth of the company's
 advertising business.

Amazon Just Became Bigger Than Walmart: Here's Why?

The moment everyone has been waiting for has finally arrived, by which of course, we mean the moment when the market cap of AMZN would finally surpass Wal-mart (WMT).

Just after 4pm Jeff Bezos' Amazon reported number that were quite impressive at first blush. And at second blush as well. Among these: a whopping blow out beat on the topline of $23.2 billion in revenue, an increase of 27% from a year ago, and far above the $22.4 billion expected, which in turn resulted in Net income of $92 million, or EPS of $0.19. The street was expecting a loss of $0.14 per share.

In terms of where the bulk of the growth and profitability came from, one word, or rather three letters: AWS (Amazon Web Services), also known as the "cloud", whose net sales soared by 81% Y/Y to $1.8 billion generating a 21.4% operating margin and net income of $391 million up from $77 million a year ago.

And while the quarter was good especially for AMZN the "web services" company, it was AMZN's forecast for the future that was even more impressive:

The company now expects net sales to be between $23.3 billion and $25.5 billion, or to grow between 13% and 24% compared with third quarter 2014.  It also expects operating income (loss) is expected to be between $(480) million and $70 million, compared to $(544) million in third quarter 2014, although if the current quarter is any indicatiton this is some rather serious sandbagging.

Google blacklisting uTorrent over third-party software bundling, report says :

Earlier this year, uTorrent got into trouble for installing bitcoin mining software invisibly on users’ systems, which many saw as a fundamental breach of trust. u Torrent claims that reports of an invisible installer were inaccurate, but the company still chose to partner with a crypt o currency company whose software hijacked CPU time and was evidently meant to do the same for GPU s, once it was farther along in development.

According to Google, these changes weren’t meant to target uTorrent or torrenting specifically, but to crack down on unauthorized software installations. In a recent blog post, Google detailed how it was rolling out new improvements to its malware detection engine, stating: “In the coming weeks, these detection improvements will become more noticeable in Chrome: users will see more warnings [about] unwanted software than ever before… Safe Browsing’s focus is solely on protecting people and their data from badness. And nothing else.”

The problem I have with services like this is that while they’re useful in 95% of cases, they inevitably misclassify some software or downloads. Once this happens, the only way to download the content is to turn off Google’s malware protection from the Advanced Options menu, download the file, and turn it back on. From Microsoft to Chrome, we’re seeing an increasing trend of companies exerting more and more control over how users get updates and which software versions they can run. It’s fine to offer novice users defaults that mandate security updates, but those of us who understand the risks and are willing to take them should have greater control over when and how such barricades slam down. Ultimately, it’s my PC — not Google’s, and not Microsoft’s.
